Overview

Technical Safety Engineering 101 (TSE101) is a course on ensuring process and technical safety in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries.

Audience for this course

  • Technical Safety Engineers
  • Process Engineers
  • Automated Control Systems Engineers
  • Experienced Static Mechanics and Pump and Compressor Equipment Engineers
  • Operation Engineers

Objective

This course is designed to provide the knowledge necessary to ensure process and technical safety and operability during the design and operation of production facilities in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries.

Prerequisites for this course

  1. For technologists and safety engineers
    • Education in chemical engineering or chemical technology
    • Work experience: from 0 years
  2. For automated control systems engineers
    • Education in automation and computer engineering or automated control systems
    • Work experience: from 0 years
  3. For static mechanics engineers, pump and compressor equipment engineers, and operating engineers:
    • Work experience: from 2 years

Outcomes

After completing this course, participants will have the skills to determine process safety requirements, taking into account:

  • Considerations for ensuring the operability of the production facility
  • Factors affecting the integrity of the production facility
  • Barrier effectiveness
  • Impacts on the environment and human health

You will learn:

  1. Understand and apply in practice the ideas, approaches, and meanings of process safety based on the concept of layers of protection (barriers)
  2. Establish specifications/requirements for equipment and barriers that ensure process safety:
    • Specifications for the strength of vessels and pipelines (design pressure / design temperature)
    • Specifications for safety valves
    • Specifications for process-specific Emergency shutdown functions (ESD)
    • Specifications for shutting off by ESD valves
    • Specifications for emergency pressure relief through ESD valves
    • Other specifications/requirements for equipment and barriers
  3. Classify hazardous areas (by fire/explosion risk)
  4. Analyze the state of process safety at process installations during production and business activities: in the event of failure of one or more barriers/critical equipment, during the implementation of new production operations
